Here's my take on a Heartstone card I created as a study for "Parallax Mapping". This is a screen recording directly from Unity.
I'm not sure why but I was always obsessed with "Parallax Movement". Maybe it's because I'm a child of early '90s and my earliest "gaming" memories are filled with sidescrollers and shoot 'em ups I played on C64, AMIGA and PC DOS. Maybe because it's I fancy Pop-up Books. Maybe it's because in the early days of my VFX career, I was too shy to dive into 3D modelling and looked for "workarounds" to make 2D stuff feel like 3D. Perhaps it's my deep love for those fake 3D, Lenticular printed photos you found inside cereal/crisps bags.
Anyways, many many years ago I've found the "love" I was looking for in "shaders". Somehow making a simple "plane" do way more than its intended purpose still puts a smile on my face. Every. Single. Time! 😃
Raw capture from Unity. Parallax Mapping shader created with Amplify Shader Editor. Animation done in-engine.
